STEM/STEAM
(Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math /Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math)
Why is STEM/STEAM so important?
STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. (STEAM is the acronym that includes Art). STEM/STEAM activities encourage critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving, while the teacher serves as a facilitator.
According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, STEM/STEAM occupations are growing at twice the rate of non-STEM occupations. Therefore, our students must be prepared in these content areas if they are to excel in their future endeavors.
At the elementary level, STEM/STEAM activities are woven into the GATEWAY curriculum. Students utilize the engineering design process to reason like scientists, solve problems like mathematicians, and create like inventors and artists in the real-world., Technology, Engineering, and Math are quickly becoming the world's most in-demand skill sets.
S.T.E.M. education pushes to alter the traditional ‘lecture-centered’ classroom with a curriculum that is driven by problem solving, discovery, and exploratory learning. S.T.E.M. education requires students to actively engage in a situation in order to find its solution.
